DETROIT -- Detroit police are looking for the driver who police said ran over a valet attendant outside an adult entertainment club.
The incident happened Sunday morning outside Cheetah’s on West Eight Mile Road.
Police said 36-year-old Jere Wagner was deliberately run over and then attacked by a club customer.
“I don’t understand how you can run somebody over and get out of the car and continue to beat them,” said Ashleigh Adkins, Wagner’s ex-girlfriend. “I mean, did the guy feel bad?”
Police said Wagner reportedly got into an argument with the customer, who did not want to wait in line to get his car keys.
Witnesses told police the two men exchanged words for a short time, but that the customer was eventually given his keys.
According to witnesses, the customer drove off but waited on a side street outside the club.
Witnesses told police that when Wagner walked within sight of the customer, the man sped up, drove over Wagner two times, and then got out of the car and repeatedly kicked Wagner in the head.
Wagner was treated at the hospital for severe skull fractures and a broken neck and ribs, but later died from his injuries.
Adkins said she can’t understand why the customer became violent.
“I hope they feel bad knowing that my 2-year-old daughter now does not have a father,” said Adkins. “(Jere’s) dead because he didn’t find the guy’s keys fast enough? I hope the guy feels really bad.”
Witnesses described the customer’s vehicle as a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Police said they hope to get more information after looking at surveillance video from the club.
