OAK PARK, Mich. -- A 26-year-old man is facing serious charges after police discovered his criminal history while writing him a ticket for jaywalking.
Oak Park police Lt. Mike Pousak said police are cracking down on jaywalkers in the area because of safety and quality-of-life concerns.
Violators are given a civil infraction, a small fine.
But when Kyle Roberts was cited for jaywalking across a part of Nine Mile Road, police said they discovered he had violated more than just a civil code.
"They found out he was noncompliant as a sex offender," Pousak said. "He was supposed to register quarterly. He has failed to do that and it's been six years."

Roberts is jailed with bail set at $10,000. His preliminary hearing on charges of failure to register as a sex offender is scheduled for next week.
"You never know who you're dealing with or what that person's background is or what kind of violation you're going to find," Pousak said.
