A landscaping project in the back yard of a southwest Detroit home unearthed a man's body and a murder mystery for police, Local 4 reported.
The owners of the home on Beard Street reportedly discovered a foot bone on Tuesday afternoon while digging up a concrete slab in the back yard. Homicide detectives were called to the home and later discovered a skull and some miscellaneous bones.
"It had clothes and looked like it was ... wrapped in a bedspread or something. But it was all decomposed," said Ana Ancira, whose daughter lives at the home.
The family had always wondered why the concrete patch was there because it didn't match the patio, Local 4 reported. Homicide investigators believe the concrete was covering up a murder.
"We've been able to determine it was a black male. We don't know how old the person was; we do know he died of a single gunshot wound to the head," said Detroit police homicide detective Craig Schwartz.
Police said the man was buried in the shallow, concrete-covered grave for approximately 18 years.
"There's a lot of work that needs to be done on this case," Schwartz said.
The family plans to continue their landscape project despite the incident that's now the talk of the neighborhood, Local 4 reported.
Detectives have asked anyone with information that may help solve the mystery to call the Detroit Police Department.
