A Detroit police officer was suspended Wednesday because of what he said and did on the Internet, Local 4 reported.
Officer John Bennet was suspended for allegedly creating a Web site called
FireJerryO.com.
Bennet and the other officers at the 7th Precinct reportedly got a surprise visit from Oliver at Tuesday's midnight roll call. According to a preliminary complaint report, Oliver took Bennett into a closed-door meeting and suspended him for allegedly creating the site, Local 4 reported.
Bennett sent an e-mail to Local 4 describing what happened. In the e-mail, Bennet said that Oliver told him, "We have determined that you are the webmaster and you cannot have a Web site and be a Detroit police officer. It has to be one or the other." According to Bennet, Oliver also said, "You may win, but we intend to terminate your employment from the Detroit Police Department."
The Web site was reportedly created to give officers an outlet to complain about the chief. Some say it's a grassroots effort to have Oliver removed, Local 4 reported.
Oliver has apparently had shaky relations with some of his officers since moving from Virginia to become Detroit's police chief 18 months ago, Local 4 reported.
In a one-on-one interview with Local 4 in Dec. 2002, Detroit Police Chief Jerry Oliver said he'd visited the site several times and said, though most of the information was based on rumors, he did find it entertaining.
"When you draw the line, raise the bar, they're going to be upset," Oliver said.
The Web site displays the mission of "The Jerry Oliver Must Go Coalition."
According to the site: "The Jerry Oliver Must Coalition calls for the removal of Chief Jerry Oliver immediately. We call on the clear thinking citizens of this community, other law enforcement agencies, the ecumenical community, and the many unions in this town to join us in this effort. We call on the mayor to correct the wrong and restore the pride in this uniform. (The) Detroit Police Department's long and respected tradition has been disrepected. All of the hardworking men and women of the department have been disrespected. All this from a transient Chief."
Bennett told Local 4 that Oliver warned if the site wasn't down by Wednesday, Bennett would be suspended without pay.
