A tree branch reportedly fell about a foot away from a 12-year-old boy heading to school Tuesday morning as storm damage is reported throughout metro Detroit.
Lightning hit a tree near Sashabaw Road in Orion Township Tuesday morning. Arthur Hutchinson said he was taking his grandson to school when a branch from the tree fell on his sport utility vehicle. He said the boy started to scream because there was glass everywhere, but the family was not injured.
There were reports of other trees down across Oakland County. About 20,000 DTE Energy customers were without power in southeastern Michigan, with Oakland County hit the hardest at 12,000 customers.
Other storm damage included a house struck by lightning in Macomb Township, according to the Macomb County Sheriff's Department. The extent of damage is unknown. No injuries were reported.
And metro Detroiters are cautioned not to be fooled by afternoon sunshine as an approaching cold front combination will likely trigger severe afternoon storms, according to the National Weather Service.
Local 4 meteorologist Eric Wilson said the air would become unstable after 3 p.m. and storms may become severe with winds reaching 60 mph.
The afternoon storm may include heavy rainfall, lightning and large hail. Minor flooding is expected and visibility will be reduced on roadways, according to the National Weather Service.
Wilson said Tuesday's high would reach about 88 degrees, but it would feel as if it were in the 90s.
