DETROIT -- A major online mortgage lender moves in to downtown Detroit, providing a much needed boost to the area’s economy.

Quicken Loans finished moving 1,700 employees into their headquarters in the Compuware Building in Campus Martius park on Monday.

Before the unveiling Monday, Local 4 got a sneak peek at the company's new home, which is characterized by graffiti floors, vibrant walls and modern Herman Miller office furniture.

The creative work area is spread throughout four floors of the building and includes walls that can be written on and graphics from local artists.

"It's a really cool workplace that will make every day exciting," said employee Liz Gelfusa. "I went to school down here so it's nice to be back."

Melissa Price, the facilities director, is in charge of creating the trendy atmosphere.

"Our culture is so rich and there is so much energy about it that the space has to reflect that, and that's what we've done," Price said.

Owner Dan Gilbert said he hopes his company's move to Detroit will help create a technology hub downtown.

Quicken announced in 2007 that it would move to Detroit, but switched gears when the national economy turned south.

With Quicken's move to the Compuware Corp. building and GalaxE Solutions locating downtown, Gilbert is calling a section of Woodward Avenue, "Webward Avenue." The company said its recruiting similar businesses to the area.
