The City of Allen Park is offering a unique opportunity to a lucky bidder to own a piece of automotive history.
An 11-foot nail made of painted steel -- which had been attached to the Uniroyal Tire located in Allen Park on Interstate 94 -- has been donated to the City of Allen Park by Michelin.
The nail was removed in September of 2003 as a part of a renovation of the Uniroyal Tire.
The tire was originally a Ferris wheel at the 1964 New York Worlds Fair and has stood in Allen Park since then.
The nail has been put up for auction on the Web site eBay as a means to raise funds for the Allen Park Historical Society programs and facilities.
According to a description on the auction site, the nail weighs approximately 250 pounds and will be delivered to any successful bidder within 25 miles of Allen Park.
The buyer must have a means to unload the nail with a loader or forklift. Buyers outside the 25-mile distance must arrange for their own delivery.
The item is said to be in good condition and is available for inspection by calling Allen Park City Hall at (313) 928-2473.
