Report: Casino Strike May Be Inevitable

Workers Vote Unanimously To Authorize Strike

POSTED: 2:51 p.m. EDT October 22, 2003
UPDATED: 2:56 p.m. EDT October 22, 2003

Workers at Detroit's three casinos may go on strike as early as Thursday after contract negotiations have reportedly severed, Local 4 reported.

Three-year contracts for 5,900 casino employees expired just before midnight Thursday. The casinos employ about 7,000 workers and take in about $3 million a day in revenue.

The contracts are reportedly extended day-to-day, meaning there would be at least 24 hours notice before a strike would occur, Local 4 reported.

Workers at the city's three casinos have voted overwhelmingly -- 95 percent in favor – over the weekend to authorize a strike, but contract talks continued.

"Talks are continuing," said Paul Krell, Detroit Casino Council spokesman. The council consists of five unions that represent casino workers.

"It's a standard procedure that we have a strike authorization. It's not a vote to go on strike," Krell said. "Our goal is to get a fair and equitable agreement, not to go on strike."

Representatives of Greektown, MGM Grand Detroit and MotorCity casinos had declined comment on the negotiations.
