Fired City Manager Apparently Taught Ethics Class

University Officials Say Instructors Required To Have Degree

Former Sterling Heights City Manager Steve Duchane is facing more trouble after he apparently taught an ethics course without the proper qualifications, Local 4 reported.

Duchane apparently lied about his educational background to officials at Oakland University when he applied to teach an ethics course at the school three years ago.

The university requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited school to be an instructor.

Duchane recently admitted to not having a college degree, Local 4 reported.

Duchane's apparent lies got him fired from his position as city manager in a unanimous vote by the Sterling Heights City Council Tuesday night.

Local 4 learned that Duchane's signature was on his Sterling Heights job application, which claimed he had a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan-Flint.

Officials from the University of Michigan-Flint said they had no record of Duchane attending or graduating from the school.

The city manager also claimed to have a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Century University in California -- a nonaccredited Internet school based out of New Mexico.

Duchane left Tuesday night's meeting without commenting.

There was no word on if Oakland University would be pursuing some course of punishment against Duchane.
