An attempted robbery turned into a homicide investigation after an employee at a local nightclub shot and killed an alleged carjacker, according to police.

Police say a valet outside Cheetah's Lounge at Eight Mile and Grandville roads was approached by two armed men who ordered the worker to hand over his money and car keys.

The employee handed the men $50 or $60, but then apparently struggled with them over the keys. Police say as the worker tried to run away, the culprits shouted out that they would kill him.

The worker then pulled out his gun and fired a shot at the two men, according to police.

Coworkers said the valet thought he had missed because he heard a shot ricochet off a dumpster in back of the club.

The two culprits fled west on Eight Mile Road until pulling over at a gas station in Redford, Local 4 reported.

Witnesses say the driver got out and seemed confused.

"He walked to the entrance way, but he didn't come in. So he walked back to the vehicle and I asked my friend who works here, 'What is he doing? What's going on?'" said Travis Robertson, a witness.

Robertson said police then arrived and pulled a man from the backseat of the car.

The man had apparently been struck by the valet's bullet, according to police. Authorities attempted to resuscitate the man, but he was later pronounced dead at Botsford Hospital.

Police identified the deceased as a 29-year-old man from Inkster.

The 29-year-old driver of the car, also from Inkster, was taken into custody.

Police later recovered the suspects' gun in back of Cheetah's Lounge, according to Local 4 reports.

The valet was not injured in the incident, but coworkers say he was shaken up after hearing of the man's death.

The case has been handed over to the Wayne County Prosecutor's office to determine whether the valet will face charges.

According to Local 4 sources, it is not likely that the worker will be charged.
