Victim's Family Accuses Gas Station Of Threatening Customers
POSTED: Monday, December 1, 2003
A Detroit gas station clerk appeared before a judge at the 36th District Court Monday to determine if he would stand trial on charges that he shot a customer over what was believed to be a stolen Hostess Twinkie, Local 4 reported.
Ahmed Norman Ali was bound over to stand trial on charges of felonious assault, assault with intent to do great bodily harm and felony firearms possession.
Ali, an employee at the Citgo Gas Station on Joy Road, near Dexter Road, on Detroit's west side, is accused of shooting Thomas Echols, 22, over an alleged shoplifting incident on Oct. 16, according to police.
Echols and his brother went to the gas station to buy some cigars.
Ali apparently ignored the two men. Words were then exchanged and the attendant threatened to call police, according to Local 4 reports.
Family members of Echols said the two men told Ali they would leave and calling police would not be necessary.
Echols was reportedly shot as he walked out of the gas station and into the parking lot, according to police.
Ali told police he shot Echols because he believes he was stealing a Hostess Twinkie, Local 4 reported.
Echols claimed there was another man inside the store who did the stealing, and that he took nothing, Local 4 reported.
Echols was taken to Henry Ford Hospital to be treated for his injury.
The victim's family told Local 4 that employees at the Citgo have been rude in the past, have mistreated customers and even shown weapons when they feel threatened.
Ali's trial date is set for Dec. 8 at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice.
