Man Allegedly Caught Deer Hunting In Troy

Police Find Bloody Trail, Dead Animal

POSTED: Tuesday, December 23, 2003
UPDATED: 9:14 pm EST December 23, 2003

A local man was arrested Tuesday after he reportedly confessed to shooting a deer in a suburban area.

The 35-year-old Troy man was taken into custody after he had apparently shot a deer with a crossbow in a wooded area near Livernois and Waddles roads -- next to some residential homes, a school and two churches, according to Local 4 reports.

Troy police said they became suspicious when they noticed a lone pickup truck parked behind Walsh College.

"We went and took a look inside of it. We saw some hunting cases, a bow case, some camouflage clothing," said Lt. Gerry Scherlinck, of the Troy Police Department.

Police say the Troy man then stepped out of the woods. He first told police that he was just doing some target shooting, but they apparently did not believe his story.

"(An officer) found some blood on the ground. He found a bloody arrow. He followed the blood trail and eventually that led him to a deer that had been shot with a bow and arrow," said Scherlinck.

The man then confessed to police and was taken into custody, according to Local 4 reports.

Dave Richard, who lives nearby, said there's no reason anyone should be firing weapon in a residential area.

"It's hunting season. You can get permits to hunt elsewhere where it's permitted," said Richard.

Police say hunting is illegal in Troy, and so is using a crossbow without the proper permits, Local 4 reported.

The Troy man accused of killing the deer is scheduled to appear in court. Local 4 learned he could face strict fines and possibly jail time if convicted.
