Police are working to track down two women and a man who reportedly scammed a man out of thousands of dollars.
Tabtha Steve, 18, Rose Mitchell, 32, and Stanley Steve, 37, targeted an 84-year-old Shelby Township man who was walking in a local store parking lot.
The two women approached the man and they convinced him that Tabtha Steve had cancer and needed money for medical costs, Local 4 reported.
He gave the two a check for $9,800, according to police.
Detectives say a few days later the women tracked the man down and asked him for more money. He wrote them another check for $23,000.
"They preyed on his good nature," said Detective Robert Hennigan of the Shelby Township Police Department.
The victim, who lives alone in an apartment complex, was apparently about to hand over a third check for $44,000 when he discovered that Tabtha's name was not on the list of cancer patients at local hospitals, according to police.
"They would have kept going back and asking for more and more until this guy had nothing else to give, and then they go on to the next victim," said Hennigan.
Police are advising local residents to check on their elderly family members on a regular basis to make sure they do not get caught in a similar type of scam, Local 4 reported.
Detectives continue to search for the three suspects. Anyone with information on their whereabouts has been asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) SPEAK-UP.
