Detroit To Kick Off Super Bowl XL With Winter Fest

Organizers Plan To Create Carnivallike Atmosphere In Downtown Area

A clock inside the Super Bowl offices at Ford Field Thursday read 731 days -- two years -- until the big day, and city officials and organizers are not wasting any time getting prepared, Local 4 reported.

Detroit's mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick, and event planners unwrapped plans for the Motown Winter Blast to kick off Super Bowl XL in 2006.

The event will create a winter carnivallike atmosphere in the downtown area, including figure skating, arts and crafts, and other family activities.

Kilpatrick had just returned from the Super Bowl in Houston, where he met with officials to get prepped for the city's own football frenzy, Local 4 reported.

And it appeared that following this year's controversial halftime stunt performed by pop stars Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake, the mayor wanted to make it clear that Detroit's Super Bowl would stay inbounds with its entertainment offerings.

"We want people to have good, clean fun," said Kilpatrick. "We want people to have fun here for the Super Bowl and we know that we can create the atmosphere for that. That's what Winter Blast is all about."

The Super Bowl XL Committee showed off renderings of the events planned, which included figure skating at the soon-to-be developed ice rink in Campus Martius -- near Compuware headquarters -- and an ice show in Harmony Park.

Jonathan Witz and Associates, who organized Pontiac's Arts, Beats and Eats festival, is the orchestrator of Winter Blast.

"Here we will offer a lively outdoor family event featuring ice skating appearances by Olympic-caliber skaters, snow slides, a snow maze, as well as a tented, heated arts and crafts center for children," said Witz.

The city also plans to do cross promotions with Detroit's Auto Show in 2006.

Kilpatrick added that it's all an effort to add to the appeal that earned Detroit a chance to host one of the world's biggest events.
