YPSILANTI, Mich. -- A 12-year-old boy said he was walking to school Wednesday morning when a man jumped out of a secluded area and grabbed him.
The boy was walking through an apartment complex located in the 100 block of South Grove, heading toward East Middle School on Emerick Street, around 7:30 a.m. when a stranger grabbed him by the arm, Local 4 reported. The boy reportedly fought back.
"He handled it the right way," Ypsilanti police Capt. Matt Harfhberger said.
Harfhberger credits the boy for fighting back and running to the closest location, which was his school. He was also able to give police a good description of the man: about 30 years old, black, 6 feet 4 inches tall, slim build and wearing a blue shirt and flannel pants, according to the station's report.
In addition to the boy's actions, Harfhberger said the boy should also have screamed for help to get someone else's attention.
The superintendent of the boy's school plans to inform parents of the situation by telephone Wednesday afternoon.
Police will reportedly increase patrols in the area.
