3 arrested during celebration of MSU basketball win

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Police say three people were arrested Saturday at 12:48 a.m. when they joined a crowd that gathered in the 1000 block of Water's Edge in East Lansing shortly after Michigan State basketball won its Sweet 16 game over Oklahoma.

The crowd included an estimated 500 people, authorities say.

Soon after the crowd gathered, a fire was started in the middle of the road. Members of the crowd were also throwing glass bottles into the air.

Police wearing protective gear took three people into custody for disorderly conduct violations and the rest of the crowd began to disperse. The violations included unlawfully remaining within 300 feet of an open fire.

Officers gained control of the situation within 15 minutes of the fire starting. No chemical crowd management devices were used during the incident.

The three people arrested by police are described as a 20-yera-old man from Livonia, a 19-year-old man from Plymouth and a 19-year-old man from Marquette.
