3-year-old girl killed, adults injured in shooting in east Detroit

1 person shot at Denby High School, multiple people shot on Mogul Street

DETROIT – A 3-year-old girl was killed Thursday afternoon and three other people are hospitalized after a shooting on Detroit's east side.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig was among an army of police who rushed to the scene on Mogul Street near Hayes Street and Kelly Road.

Craig said two people are in custody -- one male and one female -- and police are searching for four more. That's a total of six people who police consider suspects.

Police say this started as a big fight at nearby Denby High School on Kelly Road. One person was shot at the high school and three others, including the 3-year-old girl, were shot on Mogul Street.

Detroit EMS transported three people -- a 40-year-old woman, a 17-year-old girl and a 46-year-old man -- to St. John Providence Hospital. Their conditions are not known at this time. The 40-year-old was shot in the back, according to sources. The teen was shot near her neck. The man was shot in his stomach.

The girl, Amiracle Williams, died at the hospital.

"This is yet just another tragedy," said Craig. "We're still not certain what caused the dispute. We're getting multiple accounts of what happened. We do know that it started at Denby, there was a dispute."

Craig said the suspected shooters were in a green vehicle. Craig said this may be gang-related.

"Right now, we're not certain as to the connection, but we do have two in custody right now," he said. "We have reason to believe that there is some gang involvement, that the individuals involved were members of a local street gang."

"This ridiculous, cowardly gang violence -- gang or any kind of violence -- there's just no place for it."

Craig said they are working on getting descriptions of suspects.

"We're asking for the public's help. Any information you have about a conflict at Denby High School would be helpful," he said.
