A local family is grieving the loss of their 19-year-old son who was killed in a moped crash in Cancun, Mexico, on Monday.
Rozan Allawerdi, a senior at Warren Mott High School, was on spring break in Cancun with several friends when the crash occurred. He was riding a rented moped when he lost control of the vehicle and struck a pole, according to Local 4 reports.Allawerdi died before friends could get him to a hospital, the station reported.
His family received word of the incident on Tuesday. They last spoke with him on Easter Sunday.Allawerdi's father, Anwar, said his son was kind and respectful to his family. The 19-year-old was the youngest of five brothers.Allawerdi (pictured, right) was a member of the Warren Mott basketball and football teams. Family members say he was excited about taking his girlfriend to the prom in May, and planned on going on to college to become a teacher.
Word of his death has spread across the community, but students will formally receive notice from the school on Monday, when they return from break, the station reported. Officials plan to provide grief counselors.The school is scheduled to receive an award from the state of Michigan on Monday. Allawerdi will be remembered in a moment of silence during the award ceremony.Allawerdi's trip to Cancun was his first outside the United States since his family immigrated from Iraq in 1992.
