FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – 33-year-old Crystal Spencer of Farmington Hills lost her battle against a "flesh-eating bacteria" she contracted one month ago.
"She was actually doing so much better," said her husband Jeff Spencer. "She just took a turn for the worst and had a hard time breathing."
Jeff tells Local 4 he believes his wife picked up the deadly bacteria at another Detroit area hospital where she had surgery to remove a growth from her leg that may have been caused by her type 2 diabetes.
"She got a blood clot in her lung and they tried to revive her and revive her, but they just couldn't," said Spencer.
Doctors gave 33-year-old Crystal only a thirty percent chance of surviving the rare disease. It is unclear if she died from the infection or from complications with her diabetes
Spencer updated his Facebook status on Crystal's day to day progress, but Sunday night, he posted a message he was hoping he would never have write.
His message reads "I just lost my loving wife of 14 years of marriage. I will miss her a whole lot. I will remember all the good times I had with her. She will always be in my heart."
"She was my partner for 14 years, she had so much support from friends and family, it's just going to be so hard on me," Spencer said.
Jeff is accepting donations to help cover funeral costs. He has set up a fund at the LOC Federal Credit Union in Farmington Hills, located on 22981 Farmington Road.
