Police say a homeowner on Melrose, near Eight Mile Road, witnessed a man attempting to break in around 4 a.m.

The homeowner ran upstairs to get his gun while the intruder broke through the front window.

"About the time I got back downstairs, he had broken through the front picture window, climbing through and at that point I had no other choice but to protect myself," said the homeowner, who chose to remain anonymous.

As his wife was calling 911, the homeowner fired a shot and the man fled the scene, according to Local 4 reports.

Police say they received a call that the man was attempting to break into another residence while they were responding to the first home.

The second homeowner also fought off the intruder, according to reports.

Authorities searched the area and a police dog eventually found the man hiding in some bushes, the station reported.

The intruder was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries. It was first reported that he had been shot by one of the homeowners, but Local 4 later learned that he may have been cut while breaking through a window.

Police also arrested a woman who's believed to be the man's accomplice.

Phyllis Davis, who lives in the area, said she spotted the woman sitting in a car in front of her home.

"I looked in it and I saw a person in the car that wasn't moving so I called the police and I said, 'There's a strange car in front of my home. There's a person in the car. It looks like they're either dead or asleep,'" said Davis.

Police arrested the woman, who they believe was acting as a getaway driver, Local 4 reported.

Authorities say the man and his alleged accomplice may have been responsible for three break-ins Monday morning and possibly others.
