Reports: Police Respond To 11 Weekend Shootings

17-Year-Old Found Dead In Home

POSTED: Monday, July 12, 2004
UPDATED: 10:15 am EDT July 12, 2004

Eleven shootings -- one that was fatal -- over the weekend in Detroit happened within 24 hours of each other, Local 4 reported.

A 17-year-old boy was reportedly found dead in this Ellsworth home late Saturday night.

The fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy is believed to be drug related. He was found shot to death in his Ellsworth home around 11 p.m. Saturday by a family member, who didn't call police until 1:30 a.m., Local 4 reported.

A 25-year-old man who was shot in the head around 5 a.m. Sunday was listed in critical condition. He was driving down Linsdale Street when the shooting occurred, and hit several other cars before coming to a stop, the station reported. His passenger was also reportedly shot in the wrist and listed in temporary serious condition at a hospital.

"He was still in the driver's side seat," the 25-year-old victim's aunt, Karen Wilburn, said. "He got shot three times."

A man was sitting in a car in a driveway on Manistique around midnight Sunday when another car drove by and fired shots, police said. The victim's injuries were not life-threatening.

A 20-year-old man was shot around 3:30 a.m. Sunday while leaning inside his car in the area of Belleterre and Collingwood streets, according to police. He received a gunshot wound to the thigh and was listed in temporary serious condition.

Two 48-year-old men were standing at the corner of Lawrence and Hamilton streets when one was shot in the shoulder and the other in the leg around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, according to police.

A 15-year-old boy was also shot in the leg late Sunday night by a passing car on Greenview, Local 4 reported. He was listed in good condition Monday morning.

A 16-year-old boy was shot in the chest outside a White Castle fast-food restaurant at Livernois and Warren around 5 a.m. Sunday, according to police. A gunman tried to carjack the victim and a friend, and as they drove off, he fired shots, according to the report. The victim was listed in temporary serious condition, police said.

Police said the shooting outside White Castle was a random act of violence, but in most of the other incidents, the victim knew the attacker.

"Actually, stranger crimes in the city of Detroit are rare. They don't happen all that often," Detroit police Cmdr. Craig Schwartz said. "When you hear about a number of shootings, you have to look into how many are actually done between people who know each other."

Other weekend incidents involved two cousins who got into an argument and started to stab each other in the area of Lambert and Canton streets, according to police. One of the victims was listed in critical condition.

The names of the victims were not released.

A new firearms investigative team has been formed, combining Detroit police agents from the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Local 4 reported. Their responsibility is to respond to shooting scenes and locate who the weapon belongs to and whether or not it was sold illegally, the station reported.

Police have taken more than 470 guns off the streets so far this year, Local 4 reported.

Schwartz is expected to address the shootings at a press conference Monday afternoon at the 8th Precinct.

Hundreds Rally Against Gun Violence

A rally against gun violence brought hundreds to the city's west side Sunday.

The Youth Initiative Project held a community street rally in response to the current wave of gun violence in Detroit. The group said it is time to take guns off the streets. They want residents to know that they should show a willingness to address the issue of gun violence and believe that by working with the community the problem will be defeated.

Organizers hoped the rally would send a positive message to the youth of the city about ending gun violence.
