A 70-year-old man was taken to a local hospital after he was beat with a pipe wrench outside his home on Detroit's west side, Local 4 reported.
The homeowner was taking out the garbage Thursday morning before leaving for the day when he was approached by a man demanding he hand over his wallet, police said.
The man pulled out a pipe wrench when the 70-year-old reportedly attempted to fight back.
"(My) dad was getting him pretty good until he brought out a pipe wrench … and he hit him several times in the top of the head, several times in the back of the head, but Dad continued to fight and wrestle with this guy and was able to wrestle the wrench away, at which point (the man) took off running," said Aaron Kelly Jr., the victim's son.
Neighbor Brenda Willis said she came out of her home after hearing the victim's cries for help.
"And I heard somebody call my name and I heard banging on my window right here behind me and I came out and Mr. Kelly was covered in blood," Willis said.
An off-duty firefighter attempted to chase after the attacker on foot, but was unable to catch him, the station reported.
The victim was treated at Henry Ford Hospital, but was expected to be released Thursday afternoon.
