Construction Workers Report Panther Sighting
Authorities Notify Oakland County Animal Control
POSTED: Friday, November 12, 2004
The Oakland County Sheriff's Office received their second report of a panther sighting in Rochester Hills.
The most recent occurred last Friday at about noon, when two construction workers on a break spotted a large black cat roaming on a cider mill's property near the intersection of Dequindre and Avon Road.
The cat was described as black, about 4 feet long with a long tail.
Sheriff's deputies from the aviation unit conducted an aerial search, and officers from the substation conducted a land search. The animal was not found.
Deputies said the sighting matched one reported by technicians working in a landfill on School Road, West of Dequindre, on Oct. 20.
The engineers told authorities they saw a large, black cat-like animal with a large body and a 2- to 3-foot tail.
The cat was spotted at the east end of the dump, about 60 to 70 feet from the technicians, deputies said. The animal was walking in tall grass and was last seen entering nearby woods.
Deputies also received a report that a large, tan-colored cat ran in front of a vehicle driving south on John R near Auburn on Oct. 28.
The sheriff's office notified Oakland County Animal Control of the reports. The agency said it has also received calls of similar-type sightings.
Animal control officials said that such cat sightings are not as uncommon as one might think and that there have been no known incidents of humans being harmed by these animals.
