A woman has formed a petition to help two aging Detroit Zoo elephants.
Elizabeth Hernandez is the author of the Help Winky and Wanda Petition.
The petition is in response to a decision by the
American Zoo and Aquarium Association to condemn the Detroit Zoo's efforts to retire Winky and Wanda to an elephant sanctuary. The AZA instead insisted that the elephants go to the Columbus Zoo.
The
Detroit Zoological Society, after years of discussion and study, made the difficult decision in May to transfer out 46-year-old Wanda and 51-year-old Winky to one of two U.S. sanctuaries. There, they would be able to roam hundreds of acres and get more exercise. Elephants can walk 30 miles a day.
The Detroit Zoo had contemplated appealing the recommendation by the AZA, but violating it could bring disciplinary actions such as having its accreditation revoked.
According to the
Web site for the Winky and Wanda petition, the Columbus Zoo currently houses five elephants on just a few acres of space.
