An Ypsilanti man was inside his garage Thursday afternoon when the wooden structure exploded.
Ypsilanti firefighters received a report of an explosion at a residence in the 400 block of Orchard Street at about 2 p.m., according to a report in The Ann Arbor News. The three walls and door of the garage were all blown off the detached garage when firefighters arrived, the paper reported.
The homeowner said he had turned on the heater when he went into the garage to work. He then felt a blast of warm air and the walls were gone, the paper reported. A van and a tall freezer inside the garage reportedly kept the roof from collapsing on the man. One of the walls was blown about 10 feet away from the base of the garage.
The homeowner suffered singed eyebrows and facial hair, and was treated at the scene. The explosion did not spark a fire, according to the report.
Investigators believe the propane tank had a leak. The garage was a total loss.
