Rescue 4: Deceased Councilwoman's Son Still Getting Paid
Walter Everett III On Payroll As Ambassador To His Mother
POSTED: Thursday, January 20, 2005
DETROIT -- Rescue 4 uncovered that 14 staff members who where employed by the late City Councilwoman Kay Everett continue to be paid even after her death.
Now the Waste Watchers have learned that one of the staff members collecting a paycheck is Everett's son.

Walter Everett III (pictured, left) was on the payroll as a part-time ambassador for his mother at community events, Rescue 4 reported. He has since been reassigned to Councilwoman Joann Watson, according to the report.
Watson would not comment to Local 4 despite several phone calls, the station reported.
Walter Everett III submitted a time card to Detroit City Council last month, but it was rejected by Council President Maryann Mahaffey for reasons that were not known, Rescue 4 reported.
The 14 employees in question -- six full-time and eight part-time -- had their contracts approved by Detroit City Council before Kay Everett's Nov. 25 death. The contract to the hourly employees -- who have no benefits -- expires on June 30, at the end of the city's fiscal year, according to Local 4.
The exact cost to taxpayers for the 14 employees is not known, but is a six-figure amount, according to the reports. The Rescue 4 Waste Watchers said a Freedom of Information request will need to be submitted to determine an exact amount. The request could take up to two weeks.
Rescue 4 Waste Watchers have been sifting through possible misspending since Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick proposed budget cuts and layoffs in an effort to get the city of Detroit out of a deficit. The city faces a $214 million projected budget shortfall for next year.
