Coast Guard officials say they were "lucky" to find two men stranded on Lake St. Clair early Thursday morning after their snowmobile fell through the ice in Bouvier Bay.
Edward Wanket, 33, and another man whose name was not released, called 911 from a cell phone at about 3:45 a.m., nearly three miles from the shoreline of Brandenburg Park, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Wanket's snowmobile broke through the ice, leaving him in the water. The second man's machine stayed on the ice, but he could not pull his friend to safety, U.S. Coast Guard officials said.
Greg Houghton, of the U.S. Coast Guard, said the men gave their position on the lake based on landmarks. The men did not have any type of signaling device with them.
The men were rescued at about 4:30 a.m. by U.S. Coast Guard crews from Detroit and St. Clair Shores. The St. Clair Shores station was alerted of the situation by Chesterfield police.
Wanket was airlifted by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and transported to an air station at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, where he was met by emergency crews. He was then transported to Mount Clemens General Hospital and treated for hypothermia.
Wanket was expected to recover.
The second man was transported by boat to Brandenburg Park by St. Clair Shores U.S. Coast Guard crews and Ira Township emergency personnel. He was not injured.
Coast Guard officials warn residents to stay off the lake. Those who do venture onto the lake should bring signaling and communications equipment in case of an emergency.
