Students Suspended For Bringing Caffeine Syrup To School
School Considers Drink As Harmful As Drug
"We had two students that were involved, a student who brought it to school and shared it with a friend," said Ryan McLeod, assistant principal at the high school. "It was not similar to just a Coke or a Pepsi."According to its Web site, SkyRocket contains 100 milligrams of caffeine per 1-ounce serving. Users apparently add it to other drinks for a caffeine boost.Kristopher Epaminonda, a classmate of the suspended students, told Local 4 that the school overreacted."He had put some in a bottle, like a pop bottle and brought it to school, maybe like an ounce of it," Epaminonda said. "When they found out it wasn't alcohol, they shouldn't have suspended him because it's nothing illegal. It's not even a controlled substance."School officials said the student was using the substance with the intention to stay up for three nights to play video games.McLeod said the school used the same punishment guidelines as in any other substance abuse case, the station reported.
