SCIO TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A gift box belonging to a newlywed couple was stolen from a reception hall, Local 4 reported.

Rita Pearson said she and her husband (both pictured, left) returned to the Skill Trades Union Hall on Jackson Road in Scio Township on Sunday to collect their gifts, which were locked in the hall after their wedding reception on Saturday night.

The couple was loading gifts into their vehicle when someone apparently slipped into the hall and stole a gift box filled with cards and cash, the station reported.

Pearson and her husband estimated that the box contained about $4,000 in cash and certificates.

"Who would actually have the audacity to take gifts from anybody, let alone newlyweds from their wedding?" Pearson said.

The newlyweds planned to use the money as a down payment on their first home, the station reported.

The union hall director told Local 4 that the hall has hosted hundreds of wedding receptions and there have been no reports of any stolen items until Sunday's incident.
