DETROIT -- A local student remains hospitalized after he was shot in an alley across the street from his school, police said.
Police discovered shell casings on the ground where the shooting is believed to have occurred, across the street from Northwestern High School at Wildemere and West Grand Boulevard, Local 4 reported.
"I heard eight gunshots," said Jonathan Davis, a student at the school.
Police said an 18-year-old senior at the school suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach. He ran to the school for help after being wounded, the station reported.
The victim -- whose name was not released -- was found by officers in front of the school and transported to Henry Ford Hospital by police car at about 11 a.m. He's listed in temporary serious condition.
Authorities have not confirmed if a shooter was taken into custody after the gunfire, but sources told Local 4 that police may have found the weapon used in the shooting.
Police also handcuffed several people -- possibly teenagers -- outside a nearby home at about 12:30 p.m. The group was questioned and are considered persons of interest in connection with the shooting, Local 4 reported.
Police said no shots were fired inside the school.
Northwestern High School was put in lockdown as a precaution, according to James Tate of the Detroit Police Department.
"No students inside the school are in any danger," said Tate.
Students at Northwestern High School had a half day of school Thursday, Local 4 reported. The campus was nearly empty by 1 p.m. and West Grand Boulevard was reopened to traffic, according to the station's report.
