Residents Seek Pit Bull Ban After Child Killed
6-Year-Old Attacked By Family's Pets

Hamtramck residents want a law to ban pit bulls in their city after a 6-year-old girl was mauled to death, Local 4 reported.
Cassidy Jeter (pictured, left) was walking in an alley by her home on Belmont Street at about 9 a.m. Monday when she was attacked by two pit bulls owned by her family, Local 4 reported. The girl's mother used a two-by-four piece of wood to try and save her daughter.
Neighbors said they heard the pit bulls barking, the girl crying, and the child's mother screaming.
The girl's family was in the process of moving from their home on Belmont Street to a house one block away when the family's dogs somehow broke loose and attacked the girl, police said.
Officers who were called to the scene distracted the dogs, but were forced to shoot and kill the animals after they lunged at officers, Local 4 reported.
Cassidy was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 6-year-old girl was walking with a younger child to play on a swing set when the attack occurred, according to police. The other child was not harmed.
Family members told police the dogs -- named Sincere and Cocoa -- had no history of violent behavior and have been with the family since they were puppies.
Police continue to investigate.
