WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A historic log cabin that has been sitting undisturbed in the woods of Washington Township for about 100 years is being transported to Chesterfield Township Thursday.
Crews started to move the cabin to the Chesterfield Township Historical Society at about 9 a.m. An outhouse belonging to the cabin was already moved, Local 4 reported.
The log cabin is believed to have been built by hand -- without nails -- in the 1800s, according to historians. It was believed to be hunting headquarters for a family, and has no plumbing or electricity.George Furton, of the Chesterfield Township Historical Society, said the cabin is in "excellent condition."The move to relocate the cabin at the Chesterfield Township Historical Society was expected to take between four to six hours to complete. A police escort will assist in the move, blocking roadways along the route to its new location. The house will move south on Campground Road to 26 Mile Road; east to North Avenue; south to 21 Mile Road; and east to Sugarbush Road and the Historical Society, Local 4 reported. The Demick family, who lives off Campground Road, said they were not able to leave their home for about an hour while crews prepared to move the cabin Thursday morning."My dad said he had a hard time getting through this morning," said nearby resident, Bridget Demick.Demick said the house had been sitting on the side of the road for about three days waiting for its move.Police caution motorists traveling along the route to be prepared for backups. The Historical Society plans to open the cabin for public viewing in the summer.
