Yemeni Teen Sues Over Alleged Football Sex Assault

Students Plead No Contest To Misdemeanor Assault, Battery

POSTED: Monday, May 16, 2005
UPDATED: 7:08 pm EDT May 16, 2005

A 16-year-old immigrant from Yemen has filed a federal lawsuit against a local school district, three coaches and three football teammates.

The 17-page lawsuit details the incident that occurred in August 2003 when the boy -- then 14 years old -- was a member of the junior varsity football team at Melvindale High School.

The teen said a teammate sexually assaulted him while three others held him down.

Prosecutors charged three of the students with misdemeanor assault and battery last November. All pleaded no contest and were placed on probation.

The lawsuit also claims that the teammates ordered the teen to pick up their chewed food, repeatedly made ethnic slurs and told him to strip and dance like Osama bin Laden, Local 4 reported.

"I could understand, maybe, because of Sept. 11, but they're just taking it way too far with this whole Arab thing," the teen said.

The teen's family is suing the school district, three coaches and three Melvindale football players.

His mother told Local 4 that the school district never apologized and did not show her any respect.

The lawsuit accuses the Melvindale district of failing to adequately investigate the matter and failing to discipline coaches or students.

Local 4 left messages with the school district's superintendent and with the district's attorney, but have yet to receive a response.
