Sex Offender's Family Claims Flier Is Harassment

Police Say Flier Violates City Ordinance

POSTED: Thursday, May 19, 2005
UPDATED: 11:48 pm EDT May 19, 2005

A flier with a warning about a convicted sex offender has a local family arguing that their son's rights have been violated, Local 4 reported.

The document (pictured, left), which appears to be a printout of a page from the Michigan Department of Corrections Web site, has been posted to telephone poles across Hazel Park.

Video: Hear Reaction From Sex Offender's Parents

It contains a picture of John Glenn Sturgill -- a 32-year-old convicted sex offender, who was released on parole March 11, 2005 -- with the message, "He lives near you! Watch your children!" written across it.

Sturgill's parents, Lisa and John Sr., tore the posters down, the station reported.

"They were from 11 Mile all the way down to 8 Mile," said Lisa Sturgill. "This is an invasion of his privacy."

The Sturgills believe their son's ex-girlfriend is responsible for posting the fliers.

"She told him she was going to make his life a living hell and she has done that," Lisa Sturgill said.

Hazel Park police are investigating the couple's complaint, but because their son's sex offense is public record, the only crime that may have been committed is the violation of an ordinance prohibiting the posting of signs without permission, the station reported.

Lisa Sturgill, however, believes her son is being unfairly singled out.

"Other sex offenders do not have their picture on a telephone pole," she said.
