A former attraction at the Belle Isle Aquarium in Detroit died while en route to another facility, Local 4 reported.

Hal the alligator gar died this past weekend while being transferred to an aquarium in Colorado.

Discuss: What Do You Think Of Aquarium Closing?

Hal had been on display at Belle Isle since 1982 and was one of the larger fish at the aquarium, Local 4 reported.

The aquarium's personnel were forced to move him and other creatures from the facility after it closed last month due to city budget problems.

City officials cited a decline in attendance and a cost to taxpayers as reasons for the 101-year-old aquarium's closure.
