Nearly 1,100 Municipal Workers To Lose Jobs
Mayor Says He'll Delay Police, Firefighter Layoffs

The announcement came after the administration and city council agreed to an amendment on Monday that reallocates $23 million to public safety, saving 182 police officers and 73 firefighters from being laid off. It also restores Detroit's Homeland Security Department, according to a statement from Anthony Adams, deputy mayor of Detroit. The amendment will take about $23 million from other areas and reallocate them to the police and fire departments, city officials said."As a result of Council's adopted budget, the police and fire departments will continue to restructure, but the $23.4 million reallocation will provide some relief as they continue to make tough decisions," said Adams. Kilpatrick said he will delay laying off 738 police and firefighters until after the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. The Teamsters filed an unfair labor practices complaint with the state on Monday. Union officials said Kilpatrick isn't giving them a chance to negotiate.
