Police said they lit a firecracker and some notebook paper near a storm drain. Some gases coming from the drain were ignited, causing an explosion that burned through the children's clothes, the station reported.

"We heard the explosion," said Abdullah Algalham, the brother of one of the victims. "I looked and I saw fire and I saw one of the kids running."

One boy was reported in serious condition with burns to his hands and face. Another child was in good condition and the third boy in fair condition.

The three boys remained at Children's Hospital on Tuesday, but were expected to recover from their injuries, the station reported.
