Man Shot, Killed While Calling 911 From Gas Station

Suspect Found With Gun, Victim's Car Keys

POSTED: Tuesday, July 5, 2005

A 17-year-old man is in police custody after an early morning carjacking that left one man dead at a Pontiac Sunoco station.

The victim's final words were spoken to a 911 dispatcher just after 5 a.m. as he stood in the gas station trying to call for help.

Local 4 reported that 38-year-old David Lee Bingham (pictured, left) ran inside the gas station to get help after he was carjacked, but one of the men followed him and fired four shots into Bingham's chest.

Bingham was transported to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"The attendant handed him the phone and dialed 911," said Sgt. William Ware of the Pontiac Police. "And as he was on the phone talking to the attendant one of the assailants came in and began shooting," said Ware.

Police found a vehicle matching the description of Bingham's truck in the area of Clifford and Osmum. While checking the area, they observed a black male matching the description of one of the suspects.

The 17-year-old Pontiac resident was taken into custody. Local 4 reported that the suspect was detained after officers found a .38 caliber revolver with four spent casings in the cylinder. Officers also recovered the victim's car key in the suspect's pocket.

The second suspect is still at large and the investigation is continuing.
