DETROIT -- Some officers with the Detroit Police Department are awaiting layoff notices after an alert was issued by the union on Thursday, Local 4 reported.
The Detroit Police Officers Association issued an alert that said layoff notices will be distributed on Monday.
The alert said that the police department was preparing a list to indicate the exact number of officers, but it was expected that the layoffs will affect any officer that was hired after April 4, 2000, the station reported.
Union officials said about 715 officers have been hired since that date.
The alert also stated, "A blind drawing will be conducted on Friday, July 15, 2005, if necessary, to determine which officers in that academy class will be affected."
When asked to respond to the layoffs, City Councilwoman JoAnn Watson told Local 4, "We are not allowed to address layoffs. We asked today for a list of the layoffs and we're looking for that list from the mayor's office."
Local 4 also tried contacting officials from Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's office but had not yet received a response.
The Kilpatrick administration and City Council agreed to a budget amendment late last month that would reallocate $23 million to public safety, saving 182 police officers and 73 firefighters from being laid off.
Kilpatrick had said he would delay laying off 738 police and firefighters until after the Major League Baseball All-Star Week, which ended on Tuesday night.
