Authorities Set Up Staging Area At Drive-In Movie Theater

DEARBORN, Mich. -- Some workers at a plant in Dearborn were sent to local hospitals on Monday after a chemical spill at about noon.
The spill occurred at a chemical company in the 6000 block of Wyoming Street.
A staging area for police, fire and ambulance crews was set up outside the Ford-Wyoming Drive-In movie theater, Local 4 reported.
Seven workers were taken to area hospitals -- six of them for observation and one who experienced some breathing difficulties.
Jim Gillett, deputy fire chief with the Dearborn Fire Department, confirmed that the chemical released was hydrogen sulfide.
Gillett said the chemical release was confined to the plant and no homes or businesses in the area had to be evacuated.
Gillett told Local 4 that exposure to hydrogen sulfide starts with a rotten egg smell and can result in irritation to the eyes and possible respiratory distress.
The worker who was having breathing problems was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital, but the status of his condition was unknown.
The cause of the spill is under investigation.
