Detroit Firefighters March Against Budget Cuts
Police Support Firefighters In Downtown Rally
POSTED: Wednesday, August 10, 2005
Detroit firefighters gathered Wednesday to rally against budget cuts, Local 4 reported.
The firefighters began a march at about 11 a.m. that started at the Hotel Pontchartrain and was to end at the City County Building.
Detroit police officers also joined in the rally to show their support, the station reported.
Firefighters are hoping to convince city officials that cutting money from the departments could be harmful to the welfare of Detroit's citizens.
Jeff Pegg, a spokesman for the Detroit Firefighters' Association, said last month that a total of 59 firefighters had already had been laid off leading up to July 1.
More cuts are expected to come as the city faces a projected $300 million budget deficit.
