Victim's Mother Says Her Daughter Was Abused

DETROIT -- A man told police that he accidentally shot his girlfriend when her dogs attacked him inside a home on Detroit's west side on Monday morning, Local 4 reported.
He said he fired a shot, but missed the dogs and struck and killed his 27-year-old girlfriend, according to police.
Detroit police responded to the home located in the 19000 block of Lindsay Street, where the man was taken into custody.
The victim's mother, Sharon Phillips, said that her daughter's boyfriend was abusive and she believes that the shooting was intentional, the station reported.
"Every time he'd get violent, she'd come home and spend the night for a couple days and then he'd sweet talk her and she'd come back," Phillips said.
Phillips said that when she and her husband saw her daughter at the hospital Monday, she appeared to have wounds from being beaten, the station reported.
The couple had been dating for about six years, but Phillips and her husband recently bought a house for their daughter. Phillips said her daughter planned to leave her boyfriend and move into the new home in two weeks.
The victim's family believes the man found out about her plan and shot her, the station reported.
Police are treating the incident as a homicide. The man could face murder charges sometime this week, the station reported.
