5 injured in DDOT bus crash through brick wall of building on Detroit's west side

Witnesses say multiple people taken away in ambulances

DETROIT – Five people were injured Friday in a crash that ended when a Detroit Department of Transportation bus crashed into a building on Detroit’s west side.

The crash happened at the corner of Dexter Avenue and Doris Street. The bus crashed through a brick wall into the garage area of the Sun Valley Foods business building

It appears two other vehicles were involved in the crash. A white SUV was severely damaged in the crash and a black Honda SUV was also damaged. The white SUV came to rest in the grass next to the business and the black SUV came to rest on the sidewalk.

The 60-year-old man driving the DDOT bus was taken to Henry Ford Hospital in critical condition.

A 60-year-old man, a 65-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman in a wheelchair were passengers on the bus and were taken to Henry Ford Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The 18-year-old man driving the white SUV was taken to Henry Ford Hospital in critical condition with head and neck injuries.

Witnesses said they didn't see the crash, but they heard a massive boom. They said they thought a bomb had gone off.

Sun Valley Foods was open at the time of the crash, but it's unclear if there were people inside the garage area.

Multiple emergency medical officials, firefighters and police officers responded to the scene.
