Suspect's Bond Set At $2 Million

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A substitute teacher was arraigned Friday morning on murder charges, Local 4 reported.
Kola Hasanaj was charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count of second-degree murder and a felony firearm charge.
Police said in 1985 Hasanaj shot and killed his 23-year-old girlfriend, Christine Smith, in Clinton Township. She apparently tried to end their relationship. He then dumped her body in Highland Park, according to investigators.
Authorities believe Hasanaj used a rental car to carry out the crime.
"We're looking at where the homicide took place and after the car was used in this crime, it was taken back to the rental agency," said Captain Bruce Wade, of the Clinton Township Police Department. "The back seat, the seatbelts and items in the car were missing, which really made it stand out."
Hasanaj was arrested Thursday afternoon in the parking lot of Western High School in southwest Detroit, where he works as a substitute teacher. He was handcuffed and escorted to a nearby sheriff's substation by Clinton Township police and the Wayne County Sheriff's Department.
"It's crazy. Why would someone have someone like that in their school?" said a sophomore student at Western, who recalled Hasanaj substituting for his science teacher.
Hasanaj is being held on a $2 million bond because authorities believe he may be a flight risk, the station reported.
He's expected to return to court for a preliminary exam on Oct. 24 at 8:30 a.m.
