Report: Flaming Tennis Balls Led To Boy's Burns
Police Caution Children About Playing With Fire
POSTED: Thursday, November 10, 2005
An Ypsilanti boy suffered minor burns after playing with gasoline, tennis balls and fire Tuesday afternoon.
Police said three boys, whose ages range from 10 to 12 years old, ignited tennis balls in the driveway of one of their homes on Thornhill Drive at about 5:15 p.m., according to a report in
The Ann Arbor News. The boys rolled the flaming tennis balls down the street to watch how long they burned, according to the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department.
The boys then soaked a ball in gasoline and lit it on fire, the paper reported. The vapors traveled up the driveway and ignited the gas can, Sheriff's Cmdr. Dave Egeler said in the paper's report.
The boys tried to stomp out the fire and used a hose, according to the report. A neighbor came to the rescue with a blanket to smother the fire, according to Egeler.
One of the boys suffered minor burns to his leg.
Police cautioned the boys about the dangers of playing with fire.
