Two Perish As Fire Sweeps Through Detroit Home

Tributes Plentiful In Front Of Home

POSTED: Thursday, December 29, 2005

Balloons serve as a tribute to a 4-year-old girl who died in a house fire on Detroit's west side Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters told Local 4 there was not much they could do to save Deja Swafford and her 84-year-old great grandmother, Doretha Swafford.

A steady stream of people passed by the house on Westmoreland Thursday. Many visitors were U.S. Postal Service employees who were grieving with the girl's mother, Shawn Swafford, who is a postal carrier in Detroit.

The woman and the young girl were found lying unconscious in the home. Investigators believe the fire started in the stove area of the kitchen. The fire appears to be accidental, investigators believe.
