Police are searching for a robber who entered a busy credit union in Novi on Monday morning around 10:30 a.m. while customers, including parents and children, were inside.
Novi police said a man entered the Family Service Credit Union at 41690 10 Mile Road and produced a note that said he had a gun and an explosive device at the front door.
According to police, the man specifically requested that the teller give him $4,000. The teller turned over an unspecified amount of money.
The man exited the credit union and ran east, then got into a green 2003 Ford Explorer SUV, witnesses told police.
Farmington Hills police spotted the SUV and a chase began. Michigan State Police also joined the chase that ended up in Detroit.
Police said the driver was able to escape police around Grand River and Schaefer.
Police later identified the vehicle as stolen over the weekend out of New Hudson.
The man is described as white, between the ages of 25 and 35 with a short goatee, wearing a black knit stocking cap and dark clothing.
No one was injured.
Although most banks were closed because of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Family Service Centers are usually open some days the credit union is closed, according to its Web site.
Anyone with information is asked to call Novi police at (248) 348-7100 or Farmington Hills police at (248) 871-2700.
