629-foot merchant ship runs aground near Michigan's Upper Peninsula

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – A 629-foot merchant ship ran aground Wednesday in the St. Mary's River near Sugar Island.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the vessel Calumet departed Essar Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and was transiting in the river to its next port of call at 11:40 p.m. in Brevort.

No injuries were reported and there were no signs of pollution, the Coast Guard said.

The cause of the mishap is under investigation.
