64-year-old man killed in Pontiac crash

Police suspect drugs or alcohol was factor in crash

PONTIAC, Mich. – Peter Whittaker, a 64-year-old man from Pontiac, died Sunday after a two-car crash at the intersection of Woodward Avenue and South Boulevard in Pontiac, police say.

Whittaker was driving a 2015 Kia Forte eastbound on South Boulevard when he was hit by a 2011 Ford F250 Super Duty pickup truck driving southbound on Woodward Avenue. The Ford drove into the intersection and hit the driver's side of the Kia, according to authorities.

Witnesses say the traffic signal for the Ford was red when it drove into the intersection.

Whittaker was taken to St. Joseph Mercy hospital in Pontiac, where he died as a result of his injuries. Police say he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The 42-year-old White Lake Township man driving the Ford fled the scene of the crash on foot. He was taken into custody later in the morning at a home in Pontiac.

Police say drugs or alcohol are suspected to have been a factor that contributed to the 42-year-old crashing into the Kia. Results of a blood sample are pending.

He was taken to the Oakland County Jail pending charges.

There were no passengers in either vehicle. Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
