UPDATED: 2:17 pm EST March 17, 2006

Four men who carjacked a retired Wayne County sheriff's deputy and shot him in the chest are wanted by authorities.

The 73-year-old man was dropping off a friend's 8-year-old grandson in the area of Santa Maria and Kentfield Thursday night when he was shot by the carjackers, Local 4 reported.

The victim was transported to Sinai-Grace Hospital, where he was listed in good condition Friday morning. He underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to the chest, Local 4 reported.

Detroit police are asking for the public's help in locating the carjackers, who drove away in the victim's black 1994 Buick Roadmaster with the Michigan license plate 6FNM11.

A $2,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest in this case. Call Help Eliminate Auto Thefts at (800) 242-HEAT if you have information.
